Marco

Looking for a great companion and want only one cat? Marco may be the fellow for you!

He's quite the handsome dude with his gray tabby stripes and white paws and wait till you see those fantastic green eyes!

Marco lives with another cat but goes into seclusion if the other cat is up and moving around, even though he doesn't get picked on. His family thinks he is trying to say he'd love to be the only cat in the household.

Marco loves to do two things:

sit on your lap, especially if you are a woman

play with a sting toy with you!

How easy is that? He's sure to like other toys too once he feels more daring and knows there isn't another cat in his home! Marco has been front paw declawed.

Happy Thanksgiving

Please help Pet Haven make this a holiday to remember. One of our cats, Panther, was adopted and lost almost immediately. He has not been found. We need everyone's eyes and voices to advocate for him.

Panther came to Pet Haven Christmas 2009, we hope he can return to his foster home before Christmas 2010. Please spread the word - Panther, his fosters, Pet Haven, everyone who loves companion animals will thank you!

Fall Benefit Preliminary Numbers are In!!

I am thrilled to share preliminary numbers for our Fall Benefit! This is our third year in a row to sell out! Much to our surprise, our first year in 2007 was a sell out and we were able to raise ~$14,000 for homeless dogs and cats. In 2008, we sold out again, and raised a little over $20,000 ... again ALL going directly for our adoption program and spay/neuter initiatives.

This year, despite the struggling economy, we were able to raise almost $29,000!! We were able to do this because of the support and generosity of so many individuals and companies! Many, many thanks to everyone who helped make our third annual Fall Benefit a HUGE success.

As we finalize numbers and as we get photos from Sarah Beth Photography who donated her time to take photos of the pet fashion show (presented by Lulu & Luigi), I will post additional information on our website. For now, I have heard from many who are anxious to hear how we did ... so I didn't want to keep you waiting and to let you know that because of your support and generosity we will be able to continue rescuing and rehoming dogs and cats, spaying/neutering, and advocating on behalf of companion animals.

Stay tuned ... more info and photos to come on the Fall Benefit!

Panel Discussion on Homeless Animals

A few months ago, Pet Haven received a request from a professor at Concordia University to participate in a panel discussion on homeless pets. These types of discussion in our community are critical to increasing the awareness around homeless pets and the challenges are community faces with regards to homeless pets and the overpopulation crisis. Mary Ann Cameron, our Cat Adoption Director, will be representing Pet Haven on the panel. Sally Morton, our Dog Adoption Director, will also be there to answer questions. We are thrilled to be invited to participate in these discussions.

Each year, Concordia University, St. Paul recognizes "National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week" (Nov. 15-21) with a Convocation speech addressing these important social and political issues. This year, Concordia will be hosting a panel discussion on Homeless pets and animals.

The distinguished speakers will examine many of the challenges they face in trying to rescue homeless animals, operate shelters on tight budgets, and find people to adopt these pets. In addition, the speakers will also talk about how the recent recession and home foreclosure situation has affected pets and companion animals. The panel will include:

Mary Ann Cameron: Pet Haven of Minnesota
Kimberly Carrier: The Pet Project
Tammy Noack: Animal Humane Society
Christopher Nelson: Feline Rescue

This should be a fascinating discussion--please try to attend.

Where: Concordia University, St. Paul (275 Syndicate Street N/corner of Hamline and Marshall)
Room: Buenger Education Center (BEC)
When: Wednesday, November 18
Time: 12:00-1:00

Paw Prints for Homeless Pets

Pet Haven is extremely fortunate to be the recipient of Chuck & Don's Paw Prints holiday campaign this year. Last year Chuck & Don's raised over $26,000 as a result of their campaign, and with a 25% matching grant from C&D stores, raised a total of over $33,000 which was split between two rescues: Rescue a Golden of Minnesota (RAGOM) and Second Chance. This year, all donations raised from the C&D Paw Print Holiday campaign will go towards Pet Haven's Spay Neuter Initiative Program.

For many years Pet Haven's sole purpose was to rescue and rehome cats and dogs and that is still very much a part of what we do. A few years ago the Board of Directors saw the need to work at least as hard on preventing the situations that cause animals to become homeless as we do on rescuing them after the fact. Our mission was expanded and now includes extensive efforts to increase the number of animals that are spayed & neutered, promote animal welfare in our community, and advocate for legislation and public policy that improves the lives of companion animals.

For more info on Pet Haven's Spay/Neuter Initiative programs click here.

Chuck & Don's Paw Print Campaign runs from 11/15 through 12/31/2009.

Be sure to stop by one of the 15 Chuck & Don's stores and donate to the Paw Prints campaign ... every one of your critters at home would love to have a Paw Print with their name on it posted at one of the C&D stores! And for that matter, I think all your furry companions who have crossed over rainbow bridge would also love to have a paw print with their name on it as a nice memorial.

We are grateful to Chuck & Don's for their commitment to helping the animal welfare community in Minnesota. We especially appreciate their commitment to helping us raise donations for spay/neuter efforts.

Jolie and Jellybean!

These two girls are busy, loving older kittens.

Jolie is a very cute and extremely soft brown tabby. She is the lap girl and also loves to play. When Jolie was younger she was put outside to survive on her own and was either hit by a car or kicked. Her femur in the back leg was broken and she was not rescued before it set itself. Because of that one back leg is a little shorter than the other one but it doesn't slow her down. It should cause no problems later in life as long as she isn't allowed to become obese. Measuring out a certain amount of food each day is really a good idea for all cats and dogs.

Jellybean is actually the most energetic of the pair although in her picture, she seems more sedate. We'll try to get an action shot of her too. Jellybean has gorgeous copper colored eyes and a sleek and shiny black coat.

Jolie and Jellybean are in the same foster home and get along well together but do not have to be adopted together. Each would get along fine with another cat if you have another one. Each should do fine as an only cat too.

Ms Missy

Missy was guessed to be 6-8 yrs. old when she came to Pet Haven from another shelter. She is a beautiful brown tabby torti with lots of white and slightly crossed eyes as a bonus.

Over the next year she had most of her teeth removed because of dental disease. Missy wasn't able to come to adoption events very often through no fault of her own and when she needed her shots updated, it was discovered she had lost 2#.

Missy was diagnosed with a thyroid tumor which was removed after she had taken medication to lower the levels in her body. She did very well and moved to another foster home.

Samycat, formerly Missy, has now found a new home. She has another feline friend who is 14 yrs. old. Since thyroid tumors are most often found in 10-14 yr. old cats - she and her new buddy are probably close to the same age.

Samycat has started sleeping on the bed and doesn't mind sharing her new family with another cat!

A victory for a little older girl who has lots of love and life yet to share.

There are many cats looking for homes, finding homes for 'older' cats is a very difficult problem for most rescue groups.

Consider adopting an older companion animal when it is time. They're loyal, settled, affectionate, grateful, playful in spurts and love to have a sunny window and you around for company! Lucky Samycat!

April and May

will be coming to adoptions too. If you don't like 'fall' weather, perhaps an adoption of spring-time fun and games will brighten your outlook.

April is a very pretty, very soft short haired classic gray tabby. As you can see, she loves another cat. She also likes some people attention, loves to play and will sleep with you at night.

May is also a soft little girl but has medium length hair. She is more the lap girl of the pair and enjoys playing and romping with her sister or with another cat too.

April and May join the numbers of cats and kittens (that's all they are) looking for homes through Pet Haven.

New to adoptions

Some new to Pet Haven adoptions are:

Wanda - she's a petite little girl with a white locket on her chest and one white whisker. She's definitley a girl who would like another cat in her life - that is Kruz' tail that is draped over her neck.

Kruz is a mighty handsome fellow with his copper colored eyes and medium length gray coat. He also enjoys telling you about his day!

High Jinks wants to know what you're doing?
She was named because she is a busy girl with lots of tricks and games up her sleeve and she also has a big purr and likes to snooze on you. She is a medium haired black tuxedo.

Jenny is a medium haired brown tabby with lots of white. She has 'eye liner' on which makes her very cute. Jenny loves to be talked to and will knead her paws and smile up at you when you stop to admire her. She comes for some attention to and likes to have you pick her up from the floor and give her a snuggle.

Jenny and High Jinks didn't know each other until they got together in their foster home and even though Jenny is more laid back than High Jinks, they both love to play with each other. Both are about 5 months old.

They'll all be coming to adoptions soon!
