We'll have two cat adoptions this weekend.

Babies keep growing

Padua and her 5 babies came to Pet Haven when the kittens were just opening their eyes - at about two weeks of age.

This picture shows them at 4 weeks old - still struggling to walk without dragging that fat tummy - our legs are very short!

We're getting big now, and will be 6 weeks old the first week in May. See how we've grown!

Padua continues to nurse the kittens but they are learning how to eat canned kitten food to relieve the stress on her and are trying kitten kibble too. Soon mom will be happy to have the little rug rats more independent and she will be able to be spayed and live the life of a happy young cat herself. It is a heavy load to be a mom of 5 when you are no more than a year old yourself.

Pet Haven's kittens are tested for feline leukemia and fiv (as was mom) when they are about 9 weeks of age. They begin their vaccinations and will be spayed and neutered and microchipped and continue their deworming schedule.

Engaging Youth to help homeless cats and dogs!

On April 25th Pet Haven's Outreach Team had the opportunity to participate in Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), sponsored by the Minnesota Alliance With Youth. Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning. Established in 1988, GYSD is the largest service event in the world and is now celebrated in over 100 countries. On GYSD, children and youth address the world’s most critical issues in partnership with families, schools, community and faith-based organizations, businesses, and governments.

The Minnesota event was held at the Mall of America, and included on-site service projects, entertainment by local bands and youth organizations, and an awards ceremony. Pet Haven was excited to be one of organizations to provide on-site service work. Kids and parents who stopped by the Pet Haven table were able to participate in a variety of projects, including making dog toys from tennis balls and fleece, braiding fleece strips for dog chew toys, tying no-sew blankets, decorating ping-pong balls for cat toys, and filling and decorating canning jars with decorated dog biscuits, to be sold at Pet Haven fundraising events. After completing a service project at each organization's station the kids received a checkmark on their service passport; 3 checkmarks and they received a free GYSD t-shirt.

The event was extremely busy - so much so that only an hour in the Pet Haven team had to run out to buy more supplies! The kids loved the idea of helping homeless dogs and cats, and the table was swarmed throughout the event. Huge thanks to Tiffany Fisk and Krista and Jason Colt, along with some of the Minnesota Alliance With Youth volunteers, for helping out at the event.

What a great way to get kids excited about volunteerism, and spread the word about Pet Haven!

Support Pet Haven's Garage Sale

On May 27, 28 and 29, Pet Haven will have a garage sale at a residence in Bloomington to raise funds to help homeless dogs and cats. Hours are 9-5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 9-1 on Saturday.

Our companion animals go to the vet, are checked over, receive vaccinations and flea/tick/heartworm treatment as well as for other intestinal parasites. They are spayed and neutered, microchipped and go into foster homes as part of a family until their forever home can be found.

Last year Moose came out on a harness and leash to help greet people!

How can you help?

Can you help by setting up, working or taking down the garage sale? Schedule yourself in for a few hours or a day!

Come and shop! We'll have catnip strawberries for sale in addition to many household items. No large furniture, tvs, computers but many, many other things.

Two Adoptions

Saturday, 4/17, we will be at the Chuck and Don's in Bloomington from 11-1 p.m.

Sunday, 4/18, we will be at the PetCo in Richfield from 1-3 p.m.

No 'baby' kittens but most cats are a year - 2 yrs.

Tom - a busy and active fellow!

Dot - a cute girl who gets along well with another cat and has a very long tail!

Chumley - another big fellow, black and white, no picture yet. Talkative, playful.

Brooklyn - good with another cat or a dog, playful, likes attention.

This very pretty girl knows she still needs to loose more weight but she has a great start. Her new owners have another cat also and do not free feed, both girls get measured amounts of food in the a.m. and p.m. so Sienna can continue to loose. She loves children and has two little girls to chase after and play with now too and that extra exercise will help her too!


Ali is the new girl who is on a weight loss program! We wish her every success also.

Noodles anyone?

The 4 noodles plan to attend the adoption this Sunday, 11/4, from 1- 3 p.m. at the PetCo in Richfield.

These 4 kittens are about 3.5 months old and well socialized. They love to play and are people affectionate also.

Ziti is the smallest of the group and is a little more reserved. She likes to carry her toys around the house and cuddles when she is ready.

Her sister, Penne, loves to talk and visit the adult cats in the foster home. She loves attention and is playful and busy.

The two boys are Rotini and Manicotti.

Manicotti, shown above, is the big boy of the group - he weighs in at 5# and his brother, Rotini is a solid 4.5 #. They are big boys for their age. Manicotti is a lover. Rotini guards his food bowl and plays king of the hill with his brother and sisters.

Rotini chose not to have his picture taken - he was busy playing and running. He is the only medium hair in the group and is a black/white tuxedo.

Go to PetHavenMN.org, click on Cats available for Adoption and submit an application to adopt if you are interested. Applications will be looked at as they come into the website and potential owners screened in that order at the adoption event.

Sadly, in another month there will be many too many kittens available for adoption from Pet Haven and other groups. If you don't get the one you have your eye on this weekend, there will be more coming!

Don't forget to guide your friends, family and neighbors with unaltered cats and dogs to getting that surgery done. There are lower cost programs available from Pet Haven and other groups.

Overpopulation, leading to unwanted euthanasia of adoptable cats and dogs, is solved one spay or neuter surgery at a time.

I'm not shy - once I get to know you!

Peggy is a cute little girl. She has beautiful gold eyes and a sleek and shiny coat. She is a bit of an introvert. Peggy's latest adventure was to go to a new foster home. That was pretty frightening and she had to hide under the bed while her foster mom worked on getting her to trust her - it worked, things are going well now, this is what beautiful Peggy has to say about herself:

Hi. My name is Peggy and I like to play hard to get! Once you earn my trust you will learn about all my special talents.

It took my foster mom a couple weeks of pulling me out from under the bed for me to see she was really a nice lady. She would brush and hold me - that was quite a scare even though my first foster did the same things and I even jumped up on her lap.

Sometimes I got a food treat too - I love food!

After awhile I would come out on my own and get on her lap and she didn't even have to give me a food treat all the time but it is really nice when she does.

She thinks I am one of the best lap cats ever and she's known a few cats in her years with Pet Haven. I sit on her lap and knead and sometimes can be held like a baby.

I'm checking on the critters outside the window too - she even feeds the birds, squirrels and chipmunks! I really like to watch them. Sometimes I wiggle my butt and act like I'm going to catch them.

My biggest talent though is that I am a computer geek! I help with e mails and chats and when I think it is time to get off the computer, I know just how to put it in hibernation. Aren't I smart?! She usually says, "Thanks a lot, Peggy!" I can tell she really appreciates my help!

I'd like a home with one or two adults where I can be the only cat. If you will spend some extra time helping me to get to know you I will be your special friend for all of my life - I promise!

Handsome fellows!

Dirks and Ezra are two very handsome young guys looking for a home. They get along with each other or another cat and are people affectionate and busy.

Ezra is a classic gray tabby with beautiful gold eyes and is under a year of age.

Dirks is a buff tabby with the same stunning gold eyes and is between a year and two years.

Both of these boys have been tested for feline leukemia and fiv and were negative, are up to date on vaccinations and have been neutered, dewormed a couple times and microchipped. They have also been treated for fleas and/or ear mites.

Tom

Mr. Tom decided that being outside on his own was really not the best thing in the world for a nice, friendly fellow. After hiding in a garage and being semi friendly, he felt that it was time for things to change.

Tom got a new 'do' - it was difficult to keep himself well groomed and clean when he was out hunting for food and trying to keep safe. Since he is a long hair, his coat had picked up many matts and a good share of dirt.

Tom is ready to start coming to adoptions now! He's hoping for a home that has plenty of room because he loves to run and play. Sunbaths are fine but certainly not the most important thing in his day.

He hopes for someone who enjoys playing actively with their cat - fishing pole toys, fetch, the cat dancer, those are the kinds of games he really enjoys. Not that he doesn't welcome a good cuddle every now and then too.

Tom would probably do best with adults or a family with older children. He does some play biting when he is wound up and his foster is helping him stop that by ignoring him if it happens but small children might not see his signals.

Tom is sure that anyone who comes to the apartment is coming to visit him and is happy to be the greeter!
